Super Sprint Monday Workout!
December 12, 2011 | Posted by admin | CommentsThere’s no better way to dive into the week than with a sprint workout! Though this one tends to run longer than my usual hour in the pool, the all-out 100′s leave you feeling energized for the week ahead. I hit my fast 100′s as close to 1:05 as possible and the 25′s on 11-12 seconds- whatever your speed, push yourself on these more than you typically would.
- 500 warm up of with your stroke choice.
- 4×75 Kick with board, no fins, 15 sec rest in between.
- 4×75 Pull with buoy, no paddles, 15 sec rest in between.
- 10×100 Free on 2:00, ascending each 100.
- Loosen.
- 10×100 Free on 2:30, descending each 100.
- Loosen.
- 5×25 Free from the blocks- 2 breaths for each 25! 1:15 intervals.
- Loosen and hit the showers feeling revived!

Kick Some Turkey Butt Workout!
November 28, 2011 | Posted by admin | CommentsIf you’re like most of us, you probably ate a little more than usual (understatement) and exercised a little less (if at all) during the Thanksgiving holiday. Turkey Day is a great time to reconnect with loved ones, savor the autumn flavors and get ready for the holiday season ahead! But now, it’s time to get back to our routines and improve upon them
despite shorter days, chilly days and the temptation of treats delight the senses.
My advice? Add in this challenging 60 minute swim once per week in addition to your daily routine workouts. You’ll hamper the winter doldrums with increased energy and reach for whole foods to feed your body rather than sweet treats that sap your activity drive.
I like doing this swim workout on Monday to reinvigorate for the week ahead.
- 10×100 Freestyle on the 1:30
- 6×125 Free with the last 25 FLY on the 1:45
- 8×100 Free on 1:25
- 6×125 Free with the last 25 FLY on the 1:50
- 10×100 Free on the 1:30
- Loosen with Back and Free
Did you do this workout? Let’s hear about it! Got a great workout of your own? Share it with me and other swimmers on my Facebook Wall! https://www.facebook.com/WendyBoglioli

Swim Workout: Intensity Build
September 29, 2011 | Posted by admin | Comments
If you’re like many swimmers, you may gravitate towards one or two of your favorite strokes but staying in shape for all four strokes is a great way to change up your routine while working different muscle groups. This set’s warm-up will reacquaint you with all four strokes, but the emphasis is on the increasingly challenging Freestyle swims.
- 4×100 IM for warm up with 20 sec. of rest in between each
- 4×100 Freestyle pull on 1:45 (get those arm muscles feeling it!)
- 4×50 kick with board with 10 sec. rest in between each
- 2×500 Freestyle swim (pick an interval that allows only 10 sec. rest between each 100, building with each one)
- 2×300 Freestyle swim with the same 10 sec. rest interval between each 100, but this time descending each one.
- Loosen down with an easy 100 back, 100 breast and another 100 back. Rest time between 100′s are 20 seconds… nice and easy!

What’s Your 20? A reminder from a 90 Year Old!
September 7, 2011 | Posted by admin | CommentsI recently stumbled across an article about a 90 year old surfer. No need to adjust your glasses- you read that correctly. A 90 year old surfer! You may be familiar with the story of Dorian ‘Doc’ Paskowitz, whose lifelong surfing escapades are the stuff of legend. A one-time M.D. who traded his white coat for a wetsuit and set out on a quest for waves that consumes his life to this day.
The story is great, but what I’m particularly interested in is Doc’s advice for how to keep yourself in tip top shape into your tenth decade of life- a time when most contemporaries have sadly passed away or are incapable of getting up out of their chair let alone surfing the waves of Hawaii. Don’t let Doc’s simple advice detract from its profound effectiveness. Walk every day, as much as possible. Avoid sugar and high fat foods. Be positive- always.
These life lessons are easier said than done, but the sooner you get started on them, the easier it is. While I’m still enjoying life in my 50s, I’ve seen firsthand how my friends and colleagues cope with ‘old age’ (however they define it). Those who lead active lives, eat nourishing foods and feed their souls seem light years younger in body, mind and spirit. I look to our own friends and family who have lived robust lives well into their 80s and 90s- all are incredible human beings who surmount seemingly amazing feats- but their message to us is clear: if you want it, go get it!
If you haven’t been particularly active in your life, start today. Take it with baby steps. Reduce your high fat and refined sugars. Walk, walk and walk some more. Better yet, join your local Y and start swimming- it’s gentle on the joints and one of the best cardio workouts around for people of all ages. And approach each day with vigor. We may not ever be 20 again, but would you really want to be? You’ve got years of experience, now get that body moving and seize the day.
Until next time, keep on moving!
