  • Working Out with a Smile: Stand Up Paddle Surfing

    Lake Washington, WA

Exercise should make you smile. If your routine is missing some grins, I want you to take note of a great activity that is sure to put them back on your face: stand up paddle surfing (also known as SUP).

Not sure what this new phenomenon is? Well, it’s actually an ancient sport that, like its traditional surfing counterpart, originates in Hawaii. Rather than surfing in on waves, you stand up on the board and paddle with an oar- and you don’t need to ride the waves in at all! Sounds simple right? I soon discovered that it was anything but easy. Even if your core is in tip top shape, expect to feel your midsection muscles, thighs and lats as they work to keep you balanced and moving forward.

With the great help of Bobby Arzadon and crew over at Perfect Wave in Kirkland (WA), my husband Bernie and I have been thoroughly enjoying water from the top of a surfboard over the past few months. Best part? You needn’t live in Hawaii to take it up (though after paddling on Waikiki waves and the river on the North Shore, it’s hard to beat the exercise or scenery of the islands). Anyplace with lakes or large bodies will work, and many beginners will feel more comfortable on calm waters than out in the ocean.

Here are a few great reasons why I’m falling in love with the sport, and why I think you will, too:

    • You can learn how to stand up paddle with only minutes of training! If you’re in the greater Seattle area, I encourage you to give a call to the great folks at Perfect Wave Surf Shop in Kirkland and inquire about their lessons on gorgeous Lake Washington. *Not in the area? That’s OK. Google for local SUP guides or inquire with Perfect Wave!
    • It appeals to a broad cross-section of swimmers. While it’s not necessary to have a competitive background by any means, you need to be competent enough in the water for those times when you go down. Don’t worry- if you’re paddling on a lake or calm body of water, you may not go down at all!
    • It’s a phenomenal workout that is good for all ages. I’ve seen so many families out there paddling from kids to grandparents  (even dogs on boards)!
    • If you’re interested in surfing, this may be just what the doctor ordered to get you comfortable on a board. It will build up those core muscles that you’ll need if you decide to surf in waves, too!
    • For swimmers and triathletes, this is a fantastic way to get your core and abs working (not to mention your laterals).
    • Changing up an old routine with a great core workout while smiling and breathing in the fresh air… need I say more?
