  • Travelling Swim Workouts: Tether Up!

Speaking opportunities keep my schedule hectic and I travel weekly, often catching more than one flight in a single day. Despite these obligations- ones which fulfill me personally and professionally to be sure- the happenstance of changing schedules, jet-lag, hotel exercise equipment and food on the go can leave anyone in shambles. To keep myself physically and mentally fit while on the road, I use the nearest pool and a tether for maximum efficiency.

Tiny hotel pools offer very little due to their size, but a tether is the single piece of equipment that trumps pool size and offers me a great workout while away from home. Tethering does require discipline- one has to gauge oneself as to the work load and time.  I sport a waterproof watch to help me keep track.

Often, people inquire about these workouts so here I’ll share a sample tether workout that is sure to loosen you up after travel fatigue, get those muscles and cardio working and breathe new life into an otherwise stress-inducing schedule!

    • Start with a 10 min. warm up of a combination of freestyle and backstroke. This is essential for your muscles, lungs and yourself!
    • Tether up and do 5reps of 10min freestyle breathing every other stroke with 6 beat kick. You can also do 3reps of 10min freestyle breathing every other stroke with 6 beat kick if you’re pressed for time.
    • Loosen with 5min of backstroke off the tether, nice and easy.
    • If the pool is at least 17yds (as is often the case, even in hotels), put in a good 20 lengths/laps.
    • Back on the tether for the last part: 5reps of 1min backstroke. After each backstroke minute, do 30 seconds freestyle.

That’s it- no matter what your busy schedule may be, you can still work towards your swimming or physical goals with the little help of a tether and a small pool.
